THE IMPORTANT STUFF

INSURANCE

It is strongly recommended that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property before you travel on a Contiki holiday.

Please check that the insurance covers all of the activities that you are going to be participating in as some policies exclude certain adventure activities. Your insurance policy should be arranged at the time of payment of the deposit &

will, in certain circumstances, cover you against loss of deposit or cancellation fees from the date of confirmation of your booking, as shown in the insurance policy.

Contiki cannot be held responsible for your failure to take out appropriate insurance. Should you choose to travel on a Contiki holiday without appropriate insurance, you also agree to indemnify us against all third-party claims, actions, damages & remedies which may be brought against us in respect of your participation in the holiday.

VISA INFORMATION & REQUIREMENTS

It’s important that you determine all the necessary visas that may be required for your trip.

Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries on your trip. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your trip. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa

(if required) to join a trip.

Visa & other entry & exit conditions such as currency, arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantine regulations change regularly, so make sure you stay up-to-date before you travel. It is also essential that you have any necessary vaccinations & comply with all laws of the countries visited.

TRAVEL WITH CONTIKI

LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE

TRAVEL BAG 1 Hand Luggage + 1 Suitcase or Backpack per person

PWhat you need to bring will vary according to the time of year you’re travelling & the countries you’re visiting. Make sure you’re able to carry & lift your own luggage as not every accommodation will have a lift/elevator. At times you’ll also need to walk short distances with your luggage. Due to luggage limitations we will not take any oversized suitcases. Maximum suitcase size is 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) & weight of 20kg (44lbs) plus one hand/day bag.

YOUR TRIP MANAGER

All Contiki trips are accompanied by one of our Trip Managers, with the exception of our Turkish Sailing trip which will be led by a skipper. The aim of the trip manager is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible.

Your trip manager will provide you information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eateries and introduce you to your Contiki family. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad knowledge of the places visited on trip, including historical, cultural, and social aspects.

GROUP TRAVEL

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and at Contiki we don’t just value diversity, we celebrate it. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group – patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone’s travel experience.

If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don’t keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well – this takes just a little effort on your part.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS AND CLOSURES

Sights & museums mentioned in this itinerary may be affected by public holidays and &/or scheduled closures. If you have your heart set on seeing a particular museum or sight on your trip please check ahead on the website to make sure you are not visiting that particular city on a scheduled closure. Trips operating over the Christmas & New Year period are most likely to be affected.

MONEY MATTERS

When it comes to money matters on trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget sensible amounts for things like meals, drinks, shopping, Free Time Add-on’s, tipping, and laundry. It’s always better to bring a little more than you think you’ll need.

ATM’s are widely available in major towns and cities throughout Europe. Credit and debit cards are the best way to access money throughout most trips (note though that charges are made for each transaction). Visa and Mastercard are generally preferred over American Express, etc. Smaller venues are likely to only take cash.

TRAVEL WITH CONTIKI

Check with your bank before departing that your card is accepted in the countries you are travelling to. Also ensure that your bank is aware of your travel plans as -suspecting fraud- they may cancel your cards after the first few international transactions. Beware that your withdrawing limit may vary from country to country (regardless of your withdrawal limit in your home country) and it can be as low as the equivalent to $100 USD per day.

TIPPING

In all areas of the service industry in New Zealand, it’s common practice to tip if you feel that the service received has been excellent.

The same goes for your Contiki team; if you feel that their service has been exceptional then feel free to tip them. Remember that tipping (& how much you tip) is optional – it’s entirely up to you.

VALUABLES

Please try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables and use your accommodation safes (when available) to store any valuables, money, and passport. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it much easier to obtain replacements if necessary.

STAY CONNECTED

Some things are just essential in life. Water. Food. WiFI. Mainly WiFi. We know you need to stay connected when you travel, so of course we make sure you do. Whether you’re on the road, or at your accommodation, we’ve got you sorted with the world wide web.

Our Contiki coaches in Europe come equipped with 100MB of FREE WiFi so you can check in, log on, snap, gram and update your way around the continent. Once you’ve used up all your allowance, simply login, and top up online using a credit card. Simple!

There are some exceptions, HERE'S what you need to know:

We have WiFi units on all Contiki coaches (including sub-contracted, contracted regional coaches) so we offer 100MB of FREE WiFi on the vast majority of our trips. Win! But in life there can sometimes be the odd exceptions, and in the case of Contiki trips these are the Morocco, Egypt, Turkey & Greece trips which don’t include any free coach WiFi (but who are we kidding, you’ll be out exploring anyway). In Croatia all boats offer WiFi too. Ahoy sailor!

Give your friends & family back home major FOMO by sharing your trip with them on social media. We regram heaps of our traveller photos on our official Instagram account (@contiki), & some of the best pictures might also end up plastered across the side of our coaches & on our website - earning you some likes & followers along the way. So that our social media team can find your pics, just tag them with #contiki & #euinspiration when you post. Now get snapping!

MEDICAL & HEALTH INFORMATION

Travellers with a pre-existing medical condition are required/ASKED to complete a short medical questionnaire, which must be signed by their physician. This is to ensure that travellers have the necessary fitness and mobility to comfortably complete their chosen trip. While our trip managers work hard to ensure that all our travellers are catered for equally, it is not their responsibility to help individuals who cannot complete the day’s activities unaided. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel.

FOOD & DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

Your Trip Manager will endeavour to cater for specific dietary requirements where possible. Vegetarianism,

TRAVEL WITH CONTIKI

lactose intolerance, and gluten intolerance will be catered for in most instances. There are, however some meals and activities that are fixed in advance and therefore cannot be modified to suit dietary requirements.

Please notify your reservations agent (my Contiki) of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. For those suffering from particular food allergies, your trip manager will endeavour to disclose to their fullest knowledge the main ingredients in the dishes being consumed. It is, however, your personal responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any foods to which you are allergic

DRINKING WATER

Drinking contaminated water is an easy way to get sick whilst travelling, so naturally many travellers are cautious. However, instead of creating a hard and fast rule that you are best to avoid tap water in Europe, know that in many countries, including all Western European countries, the water is perfectly safe to drink. So, save on buying and using plastic bottles and bring along a reusable water bottle on your trip instead. You can fill this up at the start of each day and feel good that you are saving on plastic and pennies.

Despite most of Europe offering safe drinking water, there are some destinations where you should exercise caution. This is not so much due to water being contaminated, but rather that you have not develop immunity to the water in the same way as the locals have. The destinations to avoid drinking tap water in Europe are the following:

Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, The Greek Islands, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, Egypt, and Jordan.

ACCOMMODATION

Summer (approximately June to August) can be very hot everywhere we travel, which means that it can be quite uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. Not all our Contiki Special Stays, hostels, hotels, or

boats have air-conditioning or fans.

A COUPLE OF RULES

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or smoking drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana is part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Contiki travellers.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment at Contiki, either between passengers or involving our Contiki crew. As noted in the booking conditions (6.5.1) Contiki has the right to remove you from trip for breaching the above conditions.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Contiki has a firm commitment to providing a secure & safe environment for all our travellers. This is regardless of but not limited to gender, sexuality, ethnicity or religious beliefs. We have a zero-tolerance policy on bullying or harassment being directed at any of our travellers and/or our team members. Harassment & bullying can take a variety of different forms & if you are made to feel uncomfortable or intimidated by another’s behaviour during your trip we would ask that you talk to your Trip Manager. Alternatively, if you witness any behaviour that you feel is unacceptable then we would also encourage you to raise this with your Trip Manager. If your Trip Manager has been unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction & you would like to escalate to a higher level, or if you don’t feel comfortable discussing the matter with them, you can contact us via email specialist.support@contiki. com or call +44- 203-368-8501 for assistance.

TRAVEL ADVICE

We recommend that you check your government’s advice for their latest travel information before your departure and that you ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas in your itinerary.

FOOD & DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

Your Trip Manager will endeavour to cater for specific dietary requirements where possible. Vegetarianism,

ABOUT YOUR TRIP

HERE ARE SOME NOTES
SPECIFIC TO EGYPT & THE NILE
ACOMMODATION

Accommodation aboard the overnight train is two-berth cabins which are comfortable and air-conditioned. All bedding is provided on board by the porter and western-style toilets are located in each carriage. Keep in mind general train cleanliness may not be to the same standards you are accustomed to.

An included dinner and breakfast are served on board. You may want to purchase something extra beforehand to supplement your meal, particularly if you’re a vegetarian. A set menu for dinner and a continental breakfast are served inside your cabin. It is recommend having a jumper or sweatshirt during the train journey as the train carriages are air conditioned.

Our Nile cruise boat is modern with many of the amenities of our comfortable hotels. Cabins are twin/double with central air-conditioning, private bathrooms, with large windows offering great views of the Nile. Facilities on board include a large single-sitting restaurant, lounge with bar, sun deck with small pool, a billiards table, and WiFi (where available). Often our cruise boats are referred to as “floating hotels” as the actual sailing distance covered is not great and Egyptian law requires that all boats dock overnight.

TEMPERATURES

Please note that as a desert region, the Middle East can have extreme weather. Temperatures are generally hot with little rain. This can become extreme during the summer months of June to August. In the months of December to March it can be very cold, particularly next to the river or the ocean and out in the desert where night temperatures can drop dramatically.

DRESS CODE

Respect local dress codes and customs, perhaps dressing more conservatively than you do at home. While visiting mosques and other religious monuments you should dress modestly, cover your shoulders and you shouldn’t wear short shorts or skirts. Outside of capital cities and the more touristic centres, local dress is often more conservative and as a matter of respect we ask that both men and women are aware of this and recommend loose-fitting clothes with your shoulders covered.

HOT AIR BALLOONS

Contiki does not offer Hot Air Balloon rides in Egypt as the operators do not carry insurance to a level acceptable to Contiki, nor can we vouch for their safety record. For this reason we cannot recommend that our guests take a Hot Air Balloon ride, nor can our Trip Managers or ground Handlers facilitate it or recommend specific operators. Should travellers choose to do so it will be entirely at their own risk.

RELIGIOUS EVENTS

Ramadan is an important part of the Muslim calendar during which Muslims all over the world follow strict fasting between sunrise & sunset. While our trips will still operate it is important to know that there may be disruptions to schedules & some limitations to services during Ramadan. It is also important to note, food for non-Muslims will be available during the day but may be limited. As a visitor it is important to display increased cultural sensitivity during Ramadan including wearing loose fitting clothes, that cover knees & shoulders & try to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public out of respect for those who cannot at the time. Ramadan in 2021 will fall between May 5th & June 4th.
